Gin and ….... hold the Tonic?

With the “mocktail” coming into fashion a few years ago, it has become common to see people sipping on a tonic and fruit concoction at social events. This fashion was defiantly approved by pregnant trend setters. Tonic water gives a delightful bitterness that transforms simple juices into complex drinks for the adult palette. Now there is a buzz of confusion about the safety of tonic water.
The concern is about the quinine that gives tonic water it's unique bitterness. This chemical best know for its treatment of malaria since the Roman Empire, does carry side effects. However, a typical prescription dose is around 648mg every eight hours. A 6oz glass of tonic water only contains 20mg of quinine. Many substance that are harmful in large doses are relatively safe in smaller doses. Caffeine, artificial sweeteners and even alcohol all fall into that category.

AAP ask FDA about Quinine.
